How to Choose the Right DJ

When you think of a DJ, you probably think of the dance floor.

But hiring a DJ can also include hiring the person who will be responsible for playing music during all the most important parts of your wedding day… including the ceremony.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your DJ.

Consider what kind of atmosphere you want.

Do you want a high-energy, upbeat day? Or are you looking for music that’s more laid back and romantic? A great DJ should cater to your musical preferences and set the tone for the rest of your guests.

Sometimes, the DJ is there only to play music. Other times, the DJ also serves as MC for the evening- announcing speeches, dismissing tables for the buffet, highlighting moments like cake cutting or bouquet toss.

Get to know your DJ, and make sure they’re organized, calm and fun. They will help create moments for your wedding, and you want to ensure that they’re a good fit for the energy you want!

When you meet with the DJ you’re considering, ask them:

Do they bring their own sound system?

Do they have backup equipment if something fails?

Do they do a sound check at the venue?

Do they charge by the hour or offer set packages?

Will they coordinate with your venue?

Do they coordinate with you or your wedding planner to determine the timeline?

Can you submit a “must play” list and “do not play” list to them?

Will they play the music for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception or only the reception?

The Contract:

Get these things in writing-

  • Hours of coverage

  • Cancellation policy

  • Payment schedule

  • Song requests and playlists

  • Any overtime charges or hidden fees.
